Rainy Day Activities For Toddlers

One of the most fun rainy day activities for toddlers is reading! Rainy days are the perfect opportunity to spend quality time with your child. You can also make mud pies, tie-dye clothes, or a lava lamp. The possibilities are endless! Read on to learn more about rainy day activities for toddlers. And don’t forget to pack a good book!

Tie-dye

Try creating a tie-dye station at home. Set up a station in a shallow cardboard box or plastic shoe box. Each child should wear a pair of gloves. Use a disposable metal roasting pan lined with plastic trash bags to contain the mess. Only use one color at a time. Then, let your child have fun knocking over toilet roll tubes with a tennis ball.

Try sidewalk chalk if you do not want to make a big mess.

Permanent markers work well and do not bleed through light-colored clothes. You can also use cardboard inside light-colored t-shirts to prevent bleed-through. Remember to draw your design on a smaller piece of paper than what you want the finished product to be. After that, your child can wear the shirt.

Make a cardboard box.

Whether your child enjoys playing with cars and trains or prefers to be a princess, a cardboard box can be a fun, versatile plaything. Buy a big cardboard box to fit a child inside, or use a small one. Once empty, children can make a whole world of imaginative play inside the box.

They can even make puppet theatres or houses! Decorate with cushions and colored markers to make the box look like a doll’s house! If you are creative, you can invite other children to a tea party, with games and other activities.

Another fun rainy day activity is making pom-poms. You can easily create a card-based butterfly with a cardboard box and some tissue paper. You only need a few supplies, such as markers, a water bottle, and some tissue paper. If you’re really stuck for ideas, you can make a rain cloud in a jar using an old cardboard box.

Make mudpies

One of the classic rainy day activities is to make mud pies. Add some rocks, leaves, or flowers, and your child will love making their mud pie. You can also use mud to introduce your child to soil mulching. Kids will also love another rainy day activity by making a mud boat with a child. Ensure you have a measuring tape and hose handy to clean up any mess.

You can also make mud paint. To make mud paint, add powdered food coloring to the mud. Your child can then use a paintbrush to paint a picture. You can also let your child have some fun with mud paint by letting them use a sponge. Mud paint is a fun way to get messy and have creative fun.

Make a lava lamp

If it’s raining outside, you can create a lava lamp at home for your child. You’ll need half a cup of water, some vegetable oil, and some Alka-Seltzer tablets. After you add the ingredients, watch as colorful bubbles float to the top of the jar! You can even give it as a gift to a friend!

To make the lava lamp, you’ll need a bottle or clear plastic container, a bit of food coloring (any color), and a bottle. Add the food coloring to about 1/3 of the way up the container. Once the water is poured in, add the cooking oil about 2″ from the top. Allow the mixture to sit for around an hour, then turn it off and enjoy your creation!

You’ll need a flashlight to see the effect, but the little one won’t care if it burns. As long as the water is in the right proportion, your child’s homemade lava lamp will continue working for a few days! Of course, you can always break out a piece and try it again – it’s as simple as that!

Make a dress-up box.

One of the best ways to keep your child entertained is to build a dress-up box. Kids love to dress up, and playing dress-up can help even the shyest of kids come to life. To get started, you can reuse old clothes and accessories and make a dress-up box for your child. Of course, you can always replace these old items with new ones to add variety.

A rainy day is a perfect time to read a book to your toddler. You can also create a sensory bin with dry beans and rice and play with tiny toys. Easter eggs and other small toys will also add to the sensory experience. If your child is young enough, try placing ice in a cup and letting them explore the ice melting into liquid water.

To add to the dress-up box, create a sensory bin. A few old wipe containers will make perfect sensory bins. Once dry, your toddler can explore and place the items in the correct order. Other sensory stations can be pots and pans, pots and pans, or a musical wall, which can be attached to the backyard fence.

Make a book

One of the best ways to stay busy on a rainy day is to make a book. Children love to read and will be happy to have a good story to follow. Adding pictures and illustrations to a book will keep them interested for hours. Another great idea is to create a sensory bin with things your toddler will love, such as dry beans, rice, tiny toys, and Easter eggs. You can also make a sensory bin by filling it with ice. One-year-olds can explore the textures of ice by exploring how the ice melts into liquid water.

Another fun rainy day activity is to make a comic book or dress up in a costume. You can even teach your child to perform simple card tricks, which can be a great rainy day activity. Card tricks are also a great way to spend the day, as they are easy to learn and require very little preparation. For younger children, you can even let them draw with magazines.

Read a book

While the rain may be depressing, your child will enjoy a good book. Aside from reading, you can also play games, do arts and crafts, or do a scavenger hunt for different colors. Kids can even make cardboard box toys, write letters to grandparents, or clean windows with vinegar. These activities will help them build their confidence and develop fine motor skills.

If your child is still young, try a book about a rainy day. This simple book is filled with bright illustrations and rhyming text. It celebrates rainy days and teaches children that the weather does not have to be dreary. You can also read a book about fun rainy days, like “In the Wind.”

Felt toys are also a great way to entertain your toddler. You can make a simple color wheel by painting sections of a pie chart with different colors. Another fun activity for your toddler is playing Kerplunk, a classic board game. You can use pom-poms instead of real balls. Plastic sticks are safe and can even be used as game pieces.

Make toiletries

Rainy days are great times for at-home science experiments. Kids love to experiment, so why not use everyday items to teach them science? For example, the magic milk experiment uses a cotton bud, washing up liquid, and milk from the refrigerator. Other activities are as simple as putting together plastic food from the play kitchen, or making a mock afternoon tea from classic teapots.

Another fun activity for a rainy day is making your child’s own comic book. Make a comic book or a dress-up costume. Your child can pretend to be a superhero, a princess, or another famous character. You can even sneak in some chores into your child’s day by making toiletries for him or her to use. It’s a great way to engage your child while preventing boredom.

If you’d rather spend your rainy day outside, grab a rain gauge and a measuring stick. Your kids can have fun playing with the gauge, and you can even make window markers out of cardboard! There are many ways to use the rain gauge, but one of the easiest is to make a long-reach model for your child. If you’re using acrylic paint, you can use a paintbrush. You can get paint from a craft store, but you’ll need a wet cloth to clean it.
