Three years after “Clueless,” Pismo Beach was mentioned in two other major films: “A Night at the Roxbury” and the cult classic “The Big Lebowski,” in which John Goodman’s character eulogizes Steve Buscemi’s Donny: “Donny was a solid player and a good man. He belonged to us. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed bowling. He also surfed the seas of Southern California. And up to Pismo.”

Heckerling stated that she had not made the Pismo correlation between “The Big Lebowski” and “Clueless,” and she had no idea if one influenced the other. However, the timelines are correct.

According to Central Coast surfboard producer Shane Stoneman, the Pismo source in “The Big Lebowski” is most likely a joke about Donny’s lack of adventure as a surfer.
